Laura Barnes is a native of Richmond, Virginia and began her telephone career with C&P Telephone Company. Prior to divestiture (when the Bell System broke away from AT&T) in 1984, she was promoted and transferred to Northern Virginia and worked in the Information System organization at Bell Atlantic’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. In 1986 Laura was transferred to Virginia Beach to the Logistics operation.

On April 1, 2004, Laura was promoted to Verizon’s Area Manager and is responsible for government and external affairs for Eastern Virginia.

Laura is a graduate of St. Leo University with a BA in Human Resource Administration and a graduate of Troy State University with an MS in Human Resource Management. Laura is an Adjunct Professor at Averett University teaching in the business curriculum. She also holds a Notary Public License for the State of Virginia.

Verizon is a charter member of Executive Women International (EWI) and Laura has been a member since 1997. She has held numerous board positions such as Treasurer, Vice President, President 2000, Membership Director, and remains on many committees. Her experience in EWI has certainly enhanced her personal and professional career because of the opportunity to network and be a leader of a wonderful organization. Laura is also on numerous other boards such as the Hampton Roads Economic Development Board, Greater Norfolk Corporation Board, Hampton Roads Technology Council, Peninsula Chamber, New Horizon’s Educational Foundation Board, and the Hampton Roads Chamber Advisory Board.

Laura’s passion is her job and when she has any free time she enjoys shopping, reading, walks on the beach, and water skiing.
