Gordon L. Gentry, Jr., is chairman of the board of the Peninsula Region of TowneBank, the largest community bank in Hampton Roads and one of the fastest growing banks in the United States. Prior to this position, he was the founding CEO of Harbor Bank which merged with TowneBank in 2004. Gentry is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and holds an MBA from the College of William and Mary. Gentry began his banking career 40 years ago with the Bank of Warwick, later to become part of the Bank of Virginia. He advanced through various bank departments to become president of the Peninsula division of Bank of Virginia, the predecessor to Signet Bank. In 1976, he was appointed regional executive officer for the Hampton Roads division of Signet Bank. In 1989, Gentry joined Tidemark Bank, formerly Newport News Savings Bank, as president and chief executive officer and subsequently became chairman of the board of TideMark Bank and its parent holding company, Tidemark Bancorp, Inc. Gentry received the CEO of the Year Award from Financial World for thrift institutions with $100-$500 million in assets in 1993. He has been president of the Hampton Roads Jaycees, president of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, president of the Peninsula Chapter of American Institute of Banking, president and campaign chairman of the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, chairman of the Peninsula Port Authority, president of Virginia International Terminals and chairman of the CNU Business School Board of Advisors, president of Greater Peninsula NOW, president of Newport News Educational foundation, president of Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Foundation, Vice-Rector of CNU, and a founder of People-to-People. Currently, he serves on the Board of Trustees of Hampton University and on the Board of Delta Dental of Virginia, Riverside Rehabilitation Institute, Virginia Air & Space Center among other organizations. He is Chairman of the Industrial Development Authority of Newport News and serves on the Board of Hampton Roads Alliance for Economic Development. He is active in banking industry affairs – serving on American Bankers Community Bank Council and recently was President of the Virginia Bankers Association. Gentry is married to the former Judy Cox and has three children and three stepchildren.
